With models small enough to keep your six-pack cold to one that would keep your deep sea fresh catch on ice, you are sure to find an Engel Cooler that will fit your needs. Remember, the key to maximum ice retention is that you have to fill the cooler with as much ice and items to minimize the air space. If you need to keep a small number of items cold, choose a smaller model. If you need more room, choose a larger model.
To put it simply, yes. Because of the rotomolded construction, airtight seal and especially the insulation, the same cooler that keeps your items cold can keep them hot.
So many factors affect ice retention that all variables would have to be exactly the same in order to make a fair comparison. Excess air space is one big factor and will affect retention adversely.
Because of the thickness of the walls, the amount of insulation and the seal on your Engel Cooler, it is an excellent vessel for using dry ice to cool its contents. Because dry ices turns to carbon dioxide as it “melt,” there are certain things you can do to prolong its retention. Engel Ice Packs are also a great substiture for dry ice.
Wrap your dry ice in few layers of newspaper and place it on top of the contents of your cooler. Regular ice and be placed below the contents. This helps prevent the dry ice from coming into contact with any water which will cause it to dissipate more quickly.
Fill any dead space in your coolers with wadded newspaper. Less dead space means slower dissipation of the dry ice.
When possible, freeze foods before a trip; this will help both wet and dry ice last longer.
Ice retention is often talked about as a way to measure the efficiency of a high-end cooler. And it is definitely an important factor to consider. However there is no industry standard for measuring it and a number of variables can affect an individual user’s results. Here at Engel, the research – as well as feedback from the field – has shown that our hard coolers retain their ice for up to 10 days.
There are a number of things you can do to retain ice in your cooler for longer:
