Does REI Accept Backorders & Preorders?

Updated:

REI will ship your item(s) as soon as REI receives them in our warehouse. Please keep in mind that the arrival date is an estimated time frame and subject to change.

REI cannot guarantee that a backorder will be filled. If the backordered item is no longer available, REI will cancel the item from your order and notify you via e-mail.

Both backorder and preorder items automatically cancel if it takes REI more than 30 days to send them. REI can extend that 30-day window if you call 1-800-426-4840 and ask REI to.

REI will not charge your credit card for either type of purchase until the item ships.

How REI Calculate Sales Tax?

Updated:

  • As a national retailer with physical retail stores nationwide, REI is required to charge applicable state and local sales tax on orders shipped to states where REI has a physical presence, which includes distribution centers, operating stores and/or new stores under construction.
  • In states in which REI does not have a physical presence, REI may be required to charge applicable state and local sales tax on orders shipped if required to do so under state and/or local tax laws, such as those enacted by the State of New York.
  • Some taxing authorities also require the taxable amount to include any shipping and handling charges, while others charge sales tax only on merchandise. REI is required to follow the rules of each state.
  • Gift Cards—No sales tax is charged when buying gift cards. The appropriate sales tax will be charged on the purchase when the gift card is used.

About REI

At Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI), we love to get outside and play, and we know first-hand the importance of quality outdoor gear. We stand behind all our products with a 100% satisfaction guarantee, and we design our own line of award-winning REI brand gear and clothing. Whether you're new to outdoor adventure or a seasoned pro, we gladly share our enthusiasm for our products—and the trails, slopes and waterways where we play.

Each year, REI donates millions of dollars to support conservation efforts nationwide and sends dedicated teams of volunteers—members, customers and REI employees—to build trails, clean up beaches, restore local habitats and more... Through responsible business practices across the company, we strive to reduce our environmental footprint.

What began as a group of 23 mountain climbing buddies is now the nation's largest consumer cooperative. But no matter how large we grow, our roots remain firmly planted in the outdoors. Our passion for outdoor adventure is clear, whether you visit any of our stores across the country, phone us, or interact with us online.

By staying true to our roots, we've earned a place on FORTUNE magazine's list of the "100 Best Companies to Work For" every year since the rankings began in 1998. We work hard to earn our reputation for quality and integrity every day.

At REI, we inspire, educate and outfit for a lifetime of outdoor adventure and stewardship.
