What Causes Acne?

A number of factors can cause acne. Teenage acne is thought to be triggered by an increase in testosterone during puberty. Acne can also be genetic. If your parents had acne, it’s likely that you’ll develop it as well.

Over 80% of adult acne occurs in women. Adult acne is likely caused by the normal hormonal fluctuations that women experience. These fluctuations are typically caused by menstruation, pregnancy, or polycystic ovary syndrome. Smoking can also trigger adult acne.

Some medications may also contribute to acne, as well as some make-up products.
